Rend Lake Crappie Report

As you can see from Travis’s post below, the crappie are about to go into full blown spawning mode! With our 7 day forecast to be in the mid to high 70s and relatively warm nights, water temps are climbing into the 60s in shallower areas of the lake. This is, by far, the earliest spawn I have seen! (about a month earlier than usual)! If you enjoy Rend Lake’s famous “buck brush fishing”, plan your trip soon!

Today! Dan, Bob & Todd with a great mess of fish! All 30 over 10″ and 20+ 9 1/2+s!

Chad’s clients, Laura and Bill with several of their 30 over 10″ plus 8 unders caught today, a rough windy day, on Rend Lake! Great job Chad!

My wonderful friends and clients, Bro Bill Kinney and Tom Ham, spent a great day on Rend Lake this week! Captured all 30 of our over 10″s and a few unders!

The Winter That Wasn’t! /Todd Gessner

This has been the mildest winter I can remember in southern Illinois! These pictures were taken in the first 10 days of February! I apologize if the picture of the crappie fillet offends anyone. It is meant to show the advanced stage of spawn sack development for early February. The second picture is of Daffodils almost 10″ tall. My final clue to the end of winter was the arrival of 3 loons on Rend Lake a week and a half ago. The point of all this is to give you all the idea our spawn will, most likely, be considerably early this year for all species. Watch the water temps and weather to plan your trip!

February 1,2012 – Todd Gessner Rend Lake Crappie

Ric Barth Jr and I fished for a hour and a half today to catch our 20 crappie over 10 inches and 5 under. The weather was gorgeous (62 & partly cloudy)!
